Energy Management

Efficient use and consumption of electricity as well as energy generated from our renewable sources.

Installation of Solar Panels TNB's renewable energy retail arm, GSPARX Sdn Bhd, signed an agreement with Malaysia Airlines Berhad (MAB) to install solar panels on four buildings at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). Through this Solar Supply Agreement (SSA), MAB will save approximately RM15 million in electricity bills over 21 years, benefiting from GSPARX's expertise in rooftop solar PV panel installation and operation. The solar PV panels to be installed will have a 2.210 MWp capacity, generating approximately 2.86 GWh of clean energy annually. It is GSPARX's largest installation at a single site and will contribute to MAB's long-term goal of reducing CO2 emissions and supporting the nation's 20% RE target by 2025. Completed in April 2021, the project is expected to offset nearly 5000 metric tons of CO2 emissions each year.

Waste Management

Our activities, products and services may lead to the generation of waste that, if improperly managed, can cause contamination of air, water and land.

Managing Waste We have set a clear target of 50% reduction in waste to landfill for the mid-term, and a long-term goal of zero waste to landfill by 2030. Ground waste recycled in KUL = 400 tonnes In-flight waste pre-segregated on board = 665 tonnes Scheduled Waste = 60 tonnes

Ground Initiatives Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle: MAG collects and recycles a variety of materials, including office waste (paper, cardboard, beverage containers) and scrap materials from support operations. In 2022, we recycled 20% of our total waste generated by our Kuala Lumpur operations. We collaborated with Alam Flora in creating awareness among our staff and vendors on the 3Rs. In addition to these efforts, our staff participated in beach cleaning exercises with the local communities in East Malaysia as part of our CSR and environmental programmes. Total waste collected during beach cleaning in 2022 = 536 kg Recycled office waste collected in 2023 = 2,301 kg Total tree planted in Tree Planting 2023 event = 21 trees

Inflight Initiatives In 2022, MAG replaced plastic-based stirrers with wooden ones and started using cutlery made from biodegradable PLA (bio-sourced plastic). Currently, MAG is in the process of replacing the PLA cutlery with wood-based ones by the second quarter of 2023. This phased switch not only helps to reduce in-flight waste but also contributes to long-term sustainability. The wood is sourced from fast-growing trees, making it a sustainable source. The lighter weight of the material also reduces the overall weight of the aircraft, increasing fuel efficiency. 14 million pieces of inflight plastic were avoided in 2022.

Scheduled Waste Initiatives The Group Sustainability Office oversees and conducts compliance exercises to ensure our processes comply with section 33A of EQA 1974 from end to end. These involve station inspections and site visits. As per section 49A, we appoint competent persons to conduct all EQA 1974 activities. In addition, we have regular training sessions to ensure our people are up to date with chemical handling and waste management.

Noise and Emission Management

Aircraft noise can be disturbing to those who live around airports, and as such, the industry has taken the responsibility of reducing noise generated from operations as much as possible.

MAB empowers passengers to support environmental conservation efforts In line with our commitment towards net-zero carbon emissions and part of our overall climate change mitigation efforts, Malaysia Airlines passengers will now be able to opt-in for an optional donation to support climate mitigation projects. We are collaborating with WWF-Malaysia to enable our passengers to support the organisation’s conservation efforts. 100% of your donation will be channelled to WWF-Malaysia’s forest conservation efforts in Batang Ai, Sarawak, where gaharu and other native trees are planted to provide additional income to the local community while helping to protect and enhance precious forests for wild orangutans.

Fuel Efficiency Programme

The consideration of Economic, Environmental and Social aspects across our core business operations (including procurement practices, fleet management, quality assurance, etc.) and our ability to remain profitable.

Fuel Efficiency Programme Malaysia Airlines has embarked on a Fuel Efficiency Programme to ensure our flights operate in a carbon efficient manner whilst putting safety as the top priority. The programme delivered savings of approximately 12,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions in the year 2020. The programme focuses on 3 main areas: 1. Flight Initiatives Single engine taxi Flight Path Optimisation Reduced drag landing Continuous Descent Zero Fuel Weight Accuracy 2. Ground Initiatives Weight reduction Optimised water uplift GPU usage for ground power Engine Compressor Wash 3. System and Innovation Fuel Efficiency System Pilot / EFB application for Fuel Savings Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Leveraging Big Data An effective aircraft maintenance programme serves to increase performance and fuel efficiency. Regular inspections, prompt structural repairs, regular cleaning, and replacement of worn-out parts will optimise aircraft performance by reducing drag, enhancing fuel efficiency. Using lightweight paint for the exterior of our aircraft reduces weight. 2022 Fuel Efficiency Savings = 33,076,700 kgs 2022 CO2 Emission Reduction = 70, 892,555 kgs

MASkargo Fuel Efficiency In 2019, MASkargo changed its 30 diesel-operated to battery operated forklift across the warehouse. This improves efficiency while driving less carbon emissions from the operating company.

Reduction of petroleum diesel impact by adopting biodiesel for Ground Service Equipment operation Supporting efforts to reduce hydrocarbon emission and smog, ADS GSEs are currently operating with biodiesel fuel. In lieu of petroleum diesel, the non-toxic and biodegradable biodiesel provides a safer and healthier environment for our Below the Wing staff. Up to 2022, 607,000 litre of biodiesel been used for GSE operations. Usage of biodiesel for heavy ground equipment operation reduces emission of hydrocarbon by up to 67% and wastewater by 79%.

Water Management

Non-potable water is used in our ground operations for cleaning aircraft and engines, and in flight for plumbing and washing. Potable water is carried on flights for consumption. We strive for efficient water management to minimize our environmental impact by reducing effluent discharge and water consumption while also lowering our carbon footprint.

Inflight Water By controlling the standard water uplift volume, the aircraft weight is lighter, reducing the fuel burn. As an example, by reducing 140kg of unnecessary water, the airline will save 5.5kg of fuel per hour per flight, corresponding to over 27kg of carbon emissions saved per hour. We have introduced a water management policy and regularly review the guidelines for equipment operators on the water quantity to be uplifted, based on aircraft type andoperating sector. In our homebase of KLIA, the implementation has been consistentwith 97% compliance rate. (Non-compliance is mostly due to technical reasons) Consistently implemented at 97% compliance level. Average of 429 flights with water savings per month or 5,148 flights per annum (exKLIA only) Total water savings = 158, 549 L per month

Aircraft and Engine Wash   Normal fuel flow reduction from a compressor wash for the A350 is around 0.5% to 1%. For the A330, recorded reduction is 0.1%, translating to 631 tonnes of carbon dioxide reduction for our fleet (2017 – 2019). To further our water management efforts, MAG is in the midst of completing the installation of a rainwater harvesting system in our hangar to serve our cleaning purposes. Total savings CO2 = 631 tonnes Fuel savings from engine wash: A350 : 0.12% B738 : 0.15%
